Out of Concern for Mom on Flickr.Via Flickr:
Explained the old saw ‘Step on a crack, break your mother’s back’ the other day. Walks in the park have gotten a bit more challenging for Trajan in light of this information. Lisa’s back continues to be without problem though so, absent any evidence to the contrary, it appears to be working.

Meh. on Flickr.Via Flickr:
In case your lust for overpriced pub food with pretensions to gourmet hasn’t already been satiated by the Cactus Club at Burrard and Dunsmuir (about 3 blocks away), Robson St (about 5 blocks away), English Bay (about 10 blocks away) or, any of the couple dozen other locations throughout the lower mainland, fear not. The gargantuan Cactus Club on the west side of Jack Poole Plaza at the Convention Center is opening soon.

Belca Belfoca Test on Flickr.Via Flickr:
I’ve had this Belca Belfoca folder rattling around in a box for well over 20 years. Not a camera with terribly much to recommend it, a three speed ‘Junior’ shutter topping out at 1/100th of a second, scale focussing, stamped metal construction. Heck, probably the best feature of this camera is the giggle-inducing ‘bonotar’ lens but, I figured what the heck and ran a couple rolls through it last weekend.
Well, it works. Results were much more drastically hurt by my myopic attempts to scale focus than from anything to do with the camera itself. It’ll go back to rattling around in a box for another 20 years and, if I can still get 120 film then, I may shoot another couple rolls with it.

Made Real by Photographs on Flickr.Via Flickr:
Susan Sontag knew that of which she spoke. Way back in 1973, she wrote in ‘On Photography’ that ‘…people in industrialiazed countries seek to have their photographs taken—feel that they are images, and are made real by photographs.’
Have been re-reading On Photography for the last month or so. It’s taking a while because I keep going off on tangents, dipping into my library or the internet to reference photographers she mentions. It’s shocking to me just how applicable a book written 40 years ago is to photography today. I’d suggest even more so now than when I first read it 20+ years ago but, I might be wrong on that.
When I first read it, I was a worldly, jaded youth. Now, I’m just a starry eyed man approaching middle age. If you have an interest in photography and haven’t read it, I suggest doing so ASAP.On Photography

"There was once a word used---swing. Swing went in one direction, it was linear, and everything had to be played with an obvious pulse and that's very restrictive. But I use the term 'rotary perception.' If you get a mental picture of the beat existing within a circle, you're more free to improvise. People used to think the notes had to fall on the center of the beats in the bar at intervals like a metronome, with three or four men in the rhythm section accenting the same pulse. That's like parade music or dance music. But imagine a circle surrounding each beat-each guy can play his notes anywhere in that circle, and it gives him a feeling he has more space. The notes fall anywhere inside the circle, but the original feeling for the beat isn't changed. If one in the group loses confidence, somebody hits the beat again. The pulse is inside you. When you're playing with musicians who think this way you can do anything. Anybody can stop and let the others go on. It's called strolling…."
