Nothing beats a Play Date with an old friend! on Flickr.Via Flickr:
Trajan finally got together with his dearest, oldest friend again on Monday. Nyana and him go way back, You can see her spot back in the days of the ‘Big Top’ at the NICU behind where Trajan’s IV used to hang here. They were roomies until Trajan moved back into the Favella and, then neighbours once again in the luxurious South Wing, with the private rooms and all where they had their first date on Christmas Day, 2010.
They’ve gotten together a few times since their days in the NICU but, nowhere near often enough.
Nyana’s had a harder road of it since their early days in the NICU. Pretty much just random chance, she’s gotten the bad card a couple times and got the infection that Trajan managed to avoid. So, she’s still got a machine to help her with her breathing while her lungs heal up. It certainly doesn’t slow her down much, she’s already walking like a trooper, while Trajan’s content to crawl still. In time, she’ll not need it anymore and nobody will be any the wiser.
Nyana’s a very particular gentle soul and, because she’s spent so much time in and out of hospital up until now, she hasn’t had a lot of exposure to the rough and tumble ways Trajan has picked up from the neighbourhood toddlers at the Gymboree. She enjoyed it to a point and, then it was time for us to move along and start planning for the next play date.
Fortunately, she’s doing very well these days so, the next Play Date should be pretty soon!

Why, of course, two baby’s feet. Trajan and his main squeeze Nyana share a moment on Granville Island today, with a Sophie the Giraffe at the ready, as always.

"There was once a word used---swing. Swing went in one direction, it was linear, and everything had to be played with an obvious pulse and that's very restrictive. But I use the term 'rotary perception.' If you get a mental picture of the beat existing within a circle, you're more free to improvise. People used to think the notes had to fall on the center of the beats in the bar at intervals like a metronome, with three or four men in the rhythm section accenting the same pulse. That's like parade music or dance music. But imagine a circle surrounding each beat-each guy can play his notes anywhere in that circle, and it gives him a feeling he has more space. The notes fall anywhere inside the circle, but the original feeling for the beat isn't changed. If one in the group loses confidence, somebody hits the beat again. The pulse is inside you. When you're playing with musicians who think this way you can do anything. Anybody can stop and let the others go on. It's called strolling…."
