Just a quick hello on Flickr.Via Flickr:
Another shot from my initial test of the Canon Serenar 100mm f/4.0 earlier in the month. The Harbour Green Water Park on a rainy autumn day, not a kid in sight.
Have been up to my ears in work lately and haven’t even scanned most of the film I developed a couple weeks ago yet! Hoping to see the sunlight (or rain shine at least) really soon!

Canon Serenar 100mm F/4.0 on Flickr.Via Flickr:
At the swap meet earlier this month I picked up a Canon 7s and a Serenar 100mm f/4.0. The Serenar is a pretty basic lens overbuilt in heavy chrome and brass to an almost comical effect. Three elements, not a lot of correction for anything but, it does seem to perform pretty decently for what it is. I suspect that it’ll be pretty good at f/8-11 but, I live in Vancouver so won’t be able to venture into those kinds of apertures until May at least.

Malcolm Lowry was right. on Flickr.Via Flickr:
His “Lament of the Pacific Northwest” is as astute an observation about Vancouver today as it was when he wrote it in 1949.
This poem was written about the very bandstand pictured here which, in over 20 years of living downtown, I have yet to see a band perform.
They are taking down the beautiful houses once built with loving hands
But still the old bandstand stands where no band stands
With clawbars they have gone to work on the poor lovely houses above the sands
At their callous work of eviction that no human law countermands
Calously at their work of hearbreak that no civic heart understands
In this pompous and joyless city of police moral perfection and one man stands
Where you are brutally thrown out of beer parlors for standing where no man stands
Where the pigeons roam free and the police listen to each pigeon’s demands
And they are taking down the beautiful homes once with loving hands
But still the old bandstand stands where no band stands.

Practising her ‘You will do anything I command. IMMEDIATELY!’ Face on Flickr.Via Flickr:
Trajan’s dear friend Nyana is pretty darn good at the whole ‘being a girl’ thing, as she demonstrates here.
She’s also pretty darn good at the whole ‘breathing’ thing now too, having almost entirely shed the extra gear that she brought home from the NICU to help her lungs heal. During the daytime at least she’s now completely untethered at last.
Not that the tethers slowed her down at all. Out of Trajan’s posse, despite having the most problems getting her lungs all cleared up, Nyana was walking months before any of the boys and is even starting to talk quite a bit.
It is lovely to see her without the apparatus, Trajan and her had a lot of fun in their two play dates last week despite what one might think from seeing just this image. A stern taskmaster, she spurred him on to finally walking almost all of the time, he’s been screwing around on this front for some months now.
The flip side of course is that now Trajan has since taken to running as wellf so Dad’s life has gotten a lot busier.

The Humble Frenchman on Flickr.Via Flickr:
On the occasion of his ensuring I didn’t get kicked out of the house by Lisa for having too many cameras (he bought my OM-2n to make room for the OM-4 I picked up at the swap meet), Arnaud was the model of humility.
A gentleman’s gentleman, despite what you may have heard, he’s currently somewhere up north breeding an army of Ent’s with which to wreak his horrible vengeance upon the world.
Glad I’m on his good side!

A developing sense of scale on Flickr.Via Flickr:
The controversial development at Davie and Bidwell is well under way now. All but the Facade of West End landmark Maxine’s, a former brothel and bawdy house built in 1905, have been torn down and the pit is dug for the new 21 story building that will replace it.
Now, I’m all in favour of densification and, the foot of Davie Street remains quite under developed. The restaurants, insurance agents and green grocer that lined this stretch of Davie Street always seemed like a severe under-utilzation of the space and, all struggled to survive as well, changing regularly.
Looking at the size of this pit, compared to the lovely old Sands Motel across the street though and, one has to wonder if this is indeed the right choice for the location.
Personally, I’ll miss the building that formerly held the green grocer on the corner. Briefly, in 1990, the building was home to a lovely café where my continuing addiction to and love affair with espresso began.

Despite my best efforts to ensure the Koala Punk has a rounded knowledge of photographic history, I was shocked to realize today that he had no idea what a polaroid was nor that it was possible to have a camera larger than his head. Even the concept of an instant photo was entirely foreign to him. And, a flash that plugs into the wall?!?
Well, this could simply not stand. Out comes the Linhof, a pack of Fuji FP100c goes into the back, the Elinchrom is fitted with an umbrella and, voila…he knows what all of those things are now.
He’s sleeping now, allowing me to get the scans done. The hard part is, which of the prints do I send him home with…

"There was once a word used---swing. Swing went in one direction, it was linear, and everything had to be played with an obvious pulse and that's very restrictive. But I use the term 'rotary perception.' If you get a mental picture of the beat existing within a circle, you're more free to improvise. People used to think the notes had to fall on the center of the beats in the bar at intervals like a metronome, with three or four men in the rhythm section accenting the same pulse. That's like parade music or dance music. But imagine a circle surrounding each beat-each guy can play his notes anywhere in that circle, and it gives him a feeling he has more space. The notes fall anywhere inside the circle, but the original feeling for the beat isn't changed. If one in the group loses confidence, somebody hits the beat again. The pulse is inside you. When you're playing with musicians who think this way you can do anything. Anybody can stop and let the others go on. It's called strolling…."
